A Change of Scenery

Boring Digs

I recently gave notice to my landlord that I’m moving. My wife and I didn’t have many good reasons to move other than the fact that we wanted a change of scenery - we are simply bored with our current place.

Cute Little House

We started apartment hunting, and after we looked at about a half-dozen places, we found the perfect little gem of an apartment. It’s a new addition to a house. It has a yard, a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, and free high-speed Internet, which are all things the previous apartment didn’t have. It’s also $40 a month cheaper.

We paid our deposit the very next day, and we sign the paperwork tomorrow. We are really excited to be moving to a newer, nicer, cheaper apartment.

Business Lesson

As I thought about moving and what I could write as a blog post, this lesson came to mind: even if your current situation is good, a little extra work and a little careful searching can make your situation better. Never stop moving forward or improving things. You can always do better. The payoff can be incredible, too. We’ll be saving nearly 10% on rent!

Take Some Time Off

Phew, it’s been a crazy few weeks. Today’s post is a little scatter-brained as a result.

Happy 4th of July!

To anyone who’s from the States like me or is an admirer of the USA, happy 4th! It was great fun for me to watch some fireworks, watch Provo’s 4th of July parade, swim in my parents’ pool, and have a great barbecue.

I’m very grateful for the wonderful country I live in. I’m grateful to have rights, which are really privileges, that allow me to live my life in the way I see fit, as long as I don’t impinge on others’ rights.

It’s sad to see the mistakes that have been made in and by the USA, but on the whole, I feel that America has done a lot of good. In spite of America’s problems and weaknesses, I feel very patriotic - this country has a lot to offer the world, and generally does a good job of promoting the causes of freedom and peace around the world.

I believe that each citizen has to do his or her part to retain hard-won freedoms and to guide the countries of the earth in the paths they should take. So let us each do our part to be good citizens and improve our world. May there be more freedom and happiness in the world!

Site Redesign

I had direct experience with the power of CSS in the last week-and-a-half. My site design had major problems in Internet Explorer, and it was lacking zest, so I redesigned it. Thanks to my diligent use of correct CSS, the whole redesign of my site only took a few hours. I only had to change the applicable tags in my stylesheet, and voila! The site was redesigned.

Let this be a lesson to you: follow the rules of site design and CSS, and you will have a much easier time of updating your site.

Shakespeare Vacation

My wife and I went to Cedar City for the annual Shakespearean Festival from the 24th through the 26th of June. We spent three days and two nights exploring the town, eating out, and rekindling the flames that brought us together.

Lindsay graduated in English, so watching a play by Shakespeare was really fun for her.

We watched “Love’s Labour’s Lost” in the Adam’s Shakespearean Theater, which is a replica of the Globe Theater.

Taking Time Off

Keeping up with your site and your blog is very important. It is very necessary for the success of your site. Occasionally, though, you will have too much to do and you will need to examine your priorities. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business it to take a few days off. Stephen Covey calls it “Sharpening the Saw.” Sometimes you have to take time to rejuvenate yourself, to allow your body to rest and your mind to wander. When you come back from relaxing or even just working on a different project, you can see things with a fresh perspective and attack them with fresh energy.

Take-home advice: if you are burned out, the very best thing you can do for your business may be to take some time off.
